Having problems with your email?  Maybe you can receive emails ok, but you can't send?  Read more below!

If you use Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail or any other free web based email, then you don't need to make any changes on your phone. However, if you're email isn't sending or you're being prompted to continually enter your password, you should log into your email directly through the web browser on your phone using your email address and password.  Further, if you're using Gmail and your mail app keeps prompting you to enter a password, or displays some other error message, you may need to perform an "unlock captcha" of your Gmail account at https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha.

If you use a work email or an ISP email (eg @bigpond.com, @johnsplumbing.com.au, @optusnet.com.au) and you can't send emails, this is because of security settings within the AT&T network.  Whenever you send an email from any device (your laptop, iPad, Tablet or phone), the email is sent out through what is called a "simple mail transfer protocol" server (an "SMTP Server").  To prevent people using the AT&T network to send millions of spam emails, AT&T only allow emails to be sent through certain "safe" SMTP Servers.  If you can't send email, it's not because your SMTP server is unsafe, it's just that AT&T haven't explicitly allowed it to be used to send emails through the AT&T network.

There are two solutions:

1. The first solution, and the easiest, is to use your internet service provider's webmail.  Most major ISPs have a website that allows email access via a web browser using your username/email and password.  Just do a Google search with your ISP name and the word "webmail" - here's some links to the most popular ISP webmail:  TPG WebmailTelstra Bigpond WebmailOptusnet WebmailiiNet WebmailWestnet Webmail.

2. Make a setting change on your device to use the AT&T SMTP server.  To do this, go to the email settings on your device and change the outgoing mail server / SMTP server to:

smtp.mail.att.net

- Port: 25

- Username: leave this field blank

- Password: leave this field blank

- Use SSL: off/unchecked

- Verify certificate: off/unchecked

If the above does not work, please try:

- cwmx.com; or

- outbound.att.net

If you are still experiencing problems please call AT&T customer service as follows:

1. From your phone, with the USA sim card inserted, dial 611. You can also from a regular phone by dialling 408-962-1025.

2. You may be prompted to enter your USA mobile number.

3. The recorded message will say "Welcome to GoPhone from AT&T", and when you hear it say "Main Menu" you should say "more options".

4. Then, at the next prompt, say "technical support".

5. At the next prompt, say "something else".

6. If you're asked whether your question is about "replacing a phone", say "no".

7. Stay on the line and you'll be transferred to an AT&T operator. If you are asked to provide your account passcode, it is the last 4 digits of your USA mobile number. For other verification, your last refill/recharge was the date you arrived in the USA.

Please note that AT&T operators are only available between Mon-Fri 7am-10pm and Sat-Sun 9am-7pm in your local USA time zone.
